Bruce, Christopher

Bruce, Christopher (1945-…), is a British dancer and choreographer (dance creator). As a choreographer, his works include Cruel Garden (1977), a collaboration with the British mime artist Lindsay Kemp; Ghost Dances (1981); and Quicksilver (1996). Bruce’s style is a dynamic combination of classical and modern dance, with strong political themes running through his work.

Bruce was born on Oct. 3, 1945, in Leicester, England. He joined the Ballet Rambert (now the Rambert Dance Company) in 1963, after studying at the company’s school. In 1967, his performance in the title role of the British choreographer Glen Tetley’s Pierrot Lunaire made him a star. From 1979 to 1987, Bruce was associate choreographer of the Ballet Rambert. He was associate choreographer at the London Festival Ballet (now the English National Ballet) from 1986 to 1991. From 1994 to 2002, he served as artistic director of the Rambert Dance Company.
