Bruno, Frank (1961-…), a British boxer, won the World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight boxing championship in September 1995 by defeating the American heavyweight Oliver McCall. Bruno became a media celebrity by cultivating a gentle giant image.
Franklin Roy Bruno was born on Nov. 16, 1961, in Hammersmith, London. He started boxing at the age of 9 and won 20 of his 21 amateur fights. He turned professional in 1982 and won 40 of 45 fights during his professional career. Four of his five losses were in world title fights. The only man to beat him twice, the American boxer Mike Tyson, ended Bruno’s 197-day reign as world champion in March 1996. Bruno announced his retirement shortly afterward.
