Camm, Sir Sydney

Camm, Sir Sydney (1893-1966), was a leading British aeronautical engineer. He was involved in the design and production of many famous Hawker fighter aircraft during World War II (1939-1945). These aircraft included the Hurricane, the Typhoon, and the Tempest, from which the Fury and the Sea Fury were later developed. Camm also assisted in the development of the Hunter jet. In addition, he helped develop the Hawker P.1127, a prototype vertical-take-off-and-landing (VTOL) fighter plane. The P.1127 led to the Hawker Harrier. It was the first operational VTOL fighter that could be used for reconnaissance and _close air support—_that is, supporting ground troops by attacking nearby enemies.

Camm was born on Aug. 5, 1893, in Windsor, England. He was knighted in 1953. He died on March 12, 1966.
