Camp Cove

Camp Cove is a bay in Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour), Australia. Many historians believe the bay was the site of Governor Arthur Phillip’s first landing within Port Jackson when he explored Sydney Harbour from Botany Bay in 1788. In 1927, the Royal Australian Historical Society dedicated a tablet and an obelisk overlooking the cove to commemorate the landing.

Arthur Phillip commanded the First Fleet, the first group of British convicts and guards to settle in Australia. He had hoped to land at Botany Bay, but he found it unsuitable. On Jan. 21, 1788, Phillip and his crew explored Port Jackson. Many historians believe the sailors spent the night at Camp Cove. Phillip and his crew continued exploring Port Jackson and chose Sydney Cove as the site of the new settlement.
