Cauthen, Steve

Cauthen, Steve (1960-…), an American jockey, became one of the greatest riders in horse racing history. In 1978, he won the United States Triple Crown (the Kentucky Derby , the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes). Riding Affirmed , Cauthen was the youngest jockey to win the Triple Crown. Cauthen became the first jockey to win both the Kentucky Derby and Epsom, or English, Derby.

Stephen Mark Cauthen was born on May 1, 1960, in Covington, Kentucky. He rode his first race in 1976. He became immediately successful and was named the country’s top jockey in 1977. In 1979, Cauthen moved to the United Kingdom and within a month had won his first European Classic, the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket. He went on to become the United Kingdom’s champion jockey in 1984, 1985, and 1987. Cauthen retired in 1993, after winning 2,794 races in the United States and Europe.
