Chauvel, Sir Harry (1865-1945), an Australian soldier, commanded the Australian Light Horse Brigade in Egypt and the Gallipoli Peninsula on the west shore of the Dardanelles during World War I (1914-1918). He led his cavalry force in victorious charges at Beersheba and Megiddo in Palestine (now Israel) and at Damascus and Aleppo in Syria. He was born in Tabulam, New South Wales, Australia, on April 16, 1865, and named Henry George Chauvel. He was knighted in 1917. From 1922 to 1930, he was chief of the general staff. He died on March 4, 1945.
