Civil List was the state financial account that paid for the maintenance of the sovereign and some members of the royal family in the United Kingdom . The amounts involved were fixed by Parliament. Most of the expenses covered by the Civil List were salaries for the royal staff. The account also covered the costs of official functions such as garden parties, receptions, and other events. The Civil List was in use from 1760 to 2012, when it was replaced by a source fund called the Sovereign Grant. The Sovereign Grant also covers royal travel, maintenance of the royal palaces, and other expenses.
