Clackmannanshire (pop. 51,778) is a local government area in Scotland. In 1996, it became a council area, a governmental unit responsible for all local government services within its boundaries. Clackmannanshire encompasses the boundaries of the old Scottish county of Clackmannanshire, which was once the smallest county in the United Kingdom. In 1975, the county came under the administration of Clackmannan District Council following local government reorganization.
Clackmannanshire is one of Scotland’s smallest council areas. It centers on the industrial town of Alloa. Other towns are Alva, Clackmannan, Dollar, and Tillicoultry. The region was once noted for coal mining, but now the chief industries are brewing and distilling, and the production of glassware and textiles. Outside Alloa is an area of lovely scenery lying between the River Forth and the Ochil Hills.
