Croft, William

Croft, William (1678-1727), was an English organist and composer who wrote highly regarded church music. Some of his religious services are still in use. He also wrote many church anthems. One of these, “St. Anne,” published in 1708, is the tune most often used for “O God, Our Help in Ages Past.” In addition, Croft composed works for harpsichord, cantatas, violin sonatas, and songs.

Croft was born in Warwickshire. He held several positions as organist, leading to his appointment as organist for Westminster Abbey in 1708. He died on Aug. 14, 1727.
