Cunningham, Andrew Brown

Cunningham, Andrew Brown (1883-1963), Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope, was first sea lord and chief of the British Naval Staff from 1943 to 1946. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, on Jan. 7, 1883, and joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15. He took command of the British Mediterranean Fleet in 1939 and then commanded the Allied Mediterranean Fleet during World War II (1939-1945). He rose to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet. Cunningham wrote of his experiences in his autobiography, A Sailor’s Odyssey (1951). He died on June 12, 1963.
