Donoghue, Steve

Donoghue, Steve (1884-1945), was one of the United Kingdom’s most successful and popular jockeys. He was champion jockey 10 successive years, from 1914 to 1923, and he rode more than 2,000 winners. He won 14 Classics, including the Derby 6 times, in 1915, 1917, 1921, 1922, 1923, and 1925.

Stephen Donoghue was born on Nov. 8, 1884, in Warrington, Cheshire. He rode his first winner in 1905, in France. He rode his first winner in England in 1909. He retired in 1937. Donoghue died on March 23, 1945.
