Edwards, Gareth

Edwards, Gareth (1947-…), a Welsh rugby star, has been called the greatest player in the history of the game. From 1967 to 1978, he played for Wales 53 times and captained the side on 13 occasions. In 1968, at the age of 20, he became the youngest captain in team history. Edwards had few equals as a scrum half and was a decisive captain.

Gareth Owen Edwards was born on July 12, 1947, in Pontardawe, near Swansea. He attended Cardiff College of Education and became a player for Cardiff Rugby Football Club in 1966. He retired in 1978. Edwards has written several books on rugby, including Rugby (1986) and Gareth Edwards’ 100 Great Rugby Players (1987).
