Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar (pop. 206,167) is the capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. It lies on the Sabarmati River. Construction of Gandhinagar began in 1966 for the city to replace Ahmadabad as Gujarat’s capital. A railroad and a highway connect Gandhinagar and Ahmadabad. As well as being Gujarat’s capital, Gandhinagar also houses the headquarters of Akshardham, a Hindu group that follows the teachings of the religious thinker Lord Swaminarayan.
