Gower, David

Gower, David (1957-…), a left-handed English batsman, was captain of the Leicestershire and England cricket teams. His timing and elegant stroke play, together with his superb fielding, delighted cricket followers throughout the world.

Gower first appeared for Leicestershire in 1975. In 1981, he shared a county record, second wicket partnership of 289 with J. C. Balderstone. Gower played his first Test match against Pakistan in 1978. He went on to play for England more than 100 times. A total of more than 8,000 runs, including 18 centuries, puts him among the top batsmen in the history of Test cricket. His highest score in Test matches was 215 against Australia. Gower captained England in 32 matches between 1984 and 1986 and again in 1989. He left Leicestershire in 1990 and joined Hampshire. He played his final Test match in 1992. David Ivon Gower was born on April 1, 1957, in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
