Hahn, Kurt

Hahn, Kurt (1886-1974), a German-born educator, founded Gordonstoun School, in Grampian Region, Scotland, in 1934. For the next 20 years, he practiced and developed his educational theories, which were based on fitness and self-respect. Prince Philip, Prince Charles, and other members of the royal family attended Gordonstoun.

Hahn was born in Berlin on June 5, 1886. He studied at Oxford, Berlin, Heidelberg, Freiburg, and Gottingen. In 1920, he opened a boarding school in Salem, Germany. He was arrested under the Nazi regime in 1933, but later moved to the United Kingdom. He died on Dec. 14, 1974.
