Hammond, Walter Reginald (1903-1965), an outstanding English cricket player, captained England and Gloucestershire cricket teams. Best known as a batsman, he scored more than 6,000 runs in 79 Test matches. He was also a good medium-pace bowler and a brilliant slip fielder. Hammond scored two separate centuries in the same match on seven occasions. He first captained England in 1938. Hammond was born on June 19, 1903, in Dover, Kent. He died on July 1, 1965.
