Hattersley, Roy (1932-…), a British politician and author, was deputy leader of the Labour Party from 1983 to 1992. He had been secretary of state for prices and consumer protection from 1976 to 1979. After the Labour election defeat in 1979, he became the opposition spokesman on home affairs.
Roy Sydney George Hattersley was born in Sheffield on Dec. 28, 1932, and attended Hull University. Hattersley was elected member of Parliament for Birmingham, Sparkbrook, in 1964 and held junior ministerial posts in each Labour government until 1976. Hattersley retired from politics in 1997. That same year, he was made a lord, but he prefers not to use the title. He has written regular columns for some of the United Kingdom’s leading newspapers and periodicals, as well as several books.
