Haughey, Charles James

Haughey, Charles James (1925-2006), served as taoiseach (prime minister) of the Republic of Ireland for three terms. Haughey became leader of the Fianna Fail Party in 1979 and held office as taoiseach from then until 1981. He served a second term from March to December 1982 and a third term from 1987 to 1992. Haughey resigned over accusations of involvement in wiretapping.

Haughey was born in Castlebar, County Mayo, on Sept. 16, 1925, and educated in Dublin. He was elected to Dail Eireann (Ireland’s lower house of Parliament) in 1957 and held various ministerial posts from 1961 to 1970. In 1970, he was charged with smuggling arms to the Irish Republican Army and dismissed from his post as minister of finance, although he kept his seat in the Dail. He was later acquitted of all charges. Haughey was minister for health and social welfare from 1977 to 1979. Haughey died on June 13, 2006.
