Hindmarsh, Sir John (1785?-1860), a British naval officer, was the first governor of South Australia, from 1836 to 1838. He shared his responsibilities with the resident commissioner of the South Australian Colonization Commission. He disagreed with the commission’s choice of a site for the new settlement of Adelaide. He began suspending public officers, and the British recalled him in 1838.
Hindmarsh was born in Britain (now the United Kingdom). He joined the navy in 1793, and fought at the battles of the Nile and of Trafalgar. He was knighted in 1851. He died in London on July 29, 1860.
