Hoad, Lew

Hoad, Lew (1934-1994), an Australian tennis player, won 13 Grand Slam singles and doubles championships during his career. Hoad won the Wimbledon men’s singles title in 1956 and 1957. In 1956, he also won the Australian and French singles titles. Hoad lost in the finals of the fourth Grand Slam championship that year when he was defeated by fellow Australian Ken Rosewall at the United States Open. Hoad and Rosewall formed a dominant men’s doubles team, and both played on the team that won the Davis Cup for Australia in 1953, 1955, and 1956.

Lewis Alan Hoad was born on Nov. 23, 1934, in Sydney. He became a professional player in 1957. He died on July 3, 1994.
