Holden, Sir Edward (1885-1947), an Australian automobile manufacturer, was a member of the family after whom the first mass-produced Australian automobile was named. With his father, Henry Holden, Edward established a business for constructing automobile bodies in 1917. In 1930, the General Motors Corporation merged with his company, Holden’s Motor Body Builders, to form General Motors-Holden’s Ltd. The first Holden automobile came off the assembly line in 1948.
Edward Wheewall Holden was born on Aug. 14, 1885, in Adelaide, South Australia. He was knighted in 1946. He died on June 17, 1947. Holden ceased all automobile production in 2017.
