Hope, Louis

Hope, Louis (1817-1894), founded the sugar industry in Queensland, Australia. He established a sugar plantation in Ormiston, near Brisbane, in 1862, and he built Australia’s first commercial raw sugar mill in 1864.

Hope was born on Oct. 29, 1817, in Hopetoun, Scotland, a son of the fourth Lord Hopetoun. He immigrated to Australia in 1843 and was granted land at Coomera River by the Queensland government in 1867. He returned to the United Kingdom in 1884, having established a successful industry. Hope died on Aug. 18, 1894.
