Horne, Donald

Horne, Donald (1921-2005), an Australian author, wrote The Lucky Country (1964). It was an evaluation of Australian society in the 1960’s that questioned many traditional attitudes. He wrote many other works, including the autobiography The Education of Young Donald (1967), Death of the Lucky Country (1976), and The Lucky Country Revisited (1987).

Donald Richmond Horne was born on Dec. 26, 1921, in Sydney and was educated at the University of Sydney and Canberra University College. He was a journalist and free-lance writer from 1946 to 1972. From 1973 to 1986, he taught on the faculty of the University of New South Wales. He served on the Australia Council from 1985 to 1990 and was chancellor of the University of Canberra from 1992 to 1995. Horne died on Sept. 8, 2005.
