Hurd, Douglas (1930-…), a Conservative Party politician, was the United Kingdom’s foreign secretary from 1989 to 1995. He served as home secretary from 1985 to 1989 and as secretary of state for Northern Ireland in 1984 and 1985. He also served as minister of state in the Foreign Office from 1979 to 1983 and in the Home Office in 1983 and 1984.
Douglas Richard Hurd was born on March 8, 1930, in Marlborough, Wiltshire. He was educated at Eton College and Cambridge University. He worked in the British diplomatic service before starting a political career in the late 1960’s. He was elected to Parliament in 1974. In 1997, following his retirement from Parliament, he was created Baron Hurd of Westwell. He has written several novels.
