Hutton, Sir Leonard (1916-1990), was captain of the England cricket team and a brilliant opening batsman. During his career, he made more than 40,000 runs. Len Hutton began playing for Yorkshire in 1934 and made the first of more than 70 Test match appearances for England in 1937, against New Zealand. At 22, Hutton scored 364 runs in a match against Australia. His score was then a record for a Test match. In 1952, he became England’s first professional captain of the 1900’s. In 1953, he led the England team that defeated Australia to regain the Ashes. He made his last Test appearance in the 1954/1955 match against New Zealand. He retired and was knighted in 1956. Hutton was born on June 23, 1916, in Fulneck, near Pudsey in Yorkshire. He died on Sept. 6, 1990.
