Johnson, Ian (1917-1998), an Australian off-spin bowler and batsman, captained the Australian cricket team in 17 Test matches against England, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, and the West Indies. Johnson made his debut against New Zealand in 1946. From 1946 to 1957, he played for Australia in 45 Test matches, taking 109 wickets and scoring more than 1,000 runs. His Test bowling average was 29.19 runs a wicket, and his best bowling performance was 7 wickets for 44 runs against the West Indies. Ian William Geddes Johnson was born on Dec. 8, 1917, in North Melbourne, Victoria. He died on Oct. 9, 1998. See also Cricket .
