Keyes, Lord (1872-1945), a British admiral, served in the Royal Navy in World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945). Keyes joined the Navy in 1885 and fought in the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900 (see Boxer Rebellion ). He helped plan naval operations during World War I and, in 1918, became commander of the Dover Patrol guarding the English Channel. He led a raid on the German submarine base at Zeebrugge in 1918.
Keyes retired in 1931 but rejoined the Navy at the outbreak of World War II in 1939. In 1940 and 1941, he was the first director of Combined Operations Command, responsible for the training of the amphibious forces called commandos. In 1943, he received the title of Baron Keyes of Zeebrugge and of Dover. Roger John Brownlow Keyes was born in India on Oct. 4, 1872. He died on Dec. 26, 1945.
