Khusrau, Amir (1253-1325), was an Indian author, scholar, and musician. His name is sometimes spelled Khusro. Khusrau was born in the village of Patiali, in the Etah district of what is now the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. He was fluent in Persian and knew Arabic and Turkish as well as his native Hindi. By the age of 20, he was already famous for his literary brilliance and fine reading voice. He enjoyed royal patronage from many rulers. Khusrau wrote histories, romances, poetry, and riddles, and compiled a Hindi-Persian dictionary. His lyric poems are still popular in India. Khusrau is also considered the first great composer and musician of Hindustani music. He died on Sept. 27, 1325.
