Lee Hsien Loong (1952-…) served as prime minister of Singapore from 2004 to 2024. He succeeded Goh Chok Tong as prime minister. Lee also served as Singapore’s finance minister from 2001 to 2007. He had served as a deputy prime minister under Goh from 1990 to 2004. Lee is the son of Lee Kuan Yew, who was prime minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990. Lee Kuan Yew and Goh Chok Tong held important positions in Lee Hsien Loong’s Cabinet from 2004 to 2011.
Lee Hsien Loong was born in Singapore on Feb. 10, 1952. He was educated in Singapore, at Cambridge University in England, and at Harvard University in the United States. Lee joined the Singapore armed forces in 1971. In 1982, he was appointed chief of general staff for operations, and the following year he became chief of staff of the Singapore army. In 1984, Lee resigned to become political secretary to the minister of defense and to become a member of Parliament. He later held ministerial posts for defense and for trade and industry. In 1986, he was elected to the central executive committee of the People’s Action Party.
In 2024, Lee resigned as prime minister. He was succeeded by Lawrence Wong, Singapore’s finance minister. Lee became senior minister in Wong’s Cabinet.
