Lee, Laurie

Lee, Laurie (1914-1997), a British author, won acclaim for three autobiographical books. Cider with Rosie (United States title, The Edge of Day, 1959), is a sensitive, nostalgic account of Lee’s childhood in Gloucestershire. As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) describes his journey to London to seek a career. A Moment of War (1991) is Lee’s account of his experiences during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The trilogy was published in the United States as Red Sky at Sunrise (1992).

Lee’s books of poetry include The Sun My Monument (1944), The Bloom of Candles (1947), My Many-Coated Man (1955), and Selected Poems (1983). He also wrote The Voyage of Magellan (1948), a radio play; A Rose for Winter (1955) a travel book; and The Firstborn (1964), an essay on the birth of his daughter. I Can’t Stay Long (1976) is a collection of short stories. Lee was born on June 26, 1914, in Stroud, Gloucestershire. He died on May 13, 1997.
