Lemass, Sean (1899-1971), was prime minister of the Republic of Ireland and leader of the Fianna Fail Party from 1959 to 1966. He worked to strengthen Ireland’s economy by encouraging new industries.
Lemass was born in Dublin and educated at Christian Brothers’ schools. He took part in the Easter Rebellion of 1916. During the struggle for Irish independence, he was imprisoned several times.
Lemass was elected to Dail Eireann (the lower house of Ireland’s Parliament) in 1924. He was a founding member of the Fianna Fail Party, which was established in 1926. In 1932, Lemass became minister for industry and commerce. He held this post, except for short periods, until he became prime minister.
