Lennard-Jones, Sir John Edward (1894-1954), was an English physical chemist. He studied the structure of liquids, the chemistry of surfaces, molecular structure, and the forces between atoms. Lennard-Jones was born on Oct. 27, 1894, in Leigh, near Bolton. He was educated in England at Manchester and Cambridge universities. He received a Ph.D. degree from Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1924. From 1925 to 1932, he taught physics at Bristol University. In 1932, he became a professor of theoretical chemistry at Cambridge University. Lennard-Jones was knighted in 1946 and died on Nov. 1, 1954.
