Lenswood Valley extends northeast and southwest about 12 miles (20 kilometers) east of Adelaide, South Australia. It is about 1,640 feet (500 meters) above sea level in the southern reach of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The annual temperature averages about 55 °F (13 °C), and the high rainfall averages 45 inches (114 centimeters) a year.
The valley’s mild climate and the relatively steep slopes make this an ideal area for cultivating fruits, though frost is a problem. Apples are the main harvest, but fruit growers also raise pears, cherries, and strawberries. Dams and underground water provide irrigation. The average size farm is 40 acres (16 hectares). The town of Lenswood serves as a center for the produce grown in the area. It has a cooperative cold storage plant and research station.
