London Gazette, The, publishes routine notices from the national government and local governments in the United Kingdom, and British legal notices. It is published Monday through Friday, except on holidays, by The Stationery Office (TSO) on behalf of the National Archives. Among the many types of official public records that it publishes are military appointments and promotions, important financial notices, public and legal notices, and announcements of awards and honors presented by the British monarch.
The London Gazette is the United Kingdom’s oldest continuously published newspaper. It was founded as The Oxford Gazette in 1665 in Oxford, England, where King Charles II and his court had taken refuge from the Great Plague. Its name was changed to The London Gazette after the court returned to London, England, late in 1665.
The information published in The London Gazette became available online in 2013. The Stationary Office has made past and present notices from The London Gazette and its two related publications—The Belfast Gazette and The Edinburgh Gazette—searchable on a single website called The Gazette.
