Lydiard, Arthur

Lydiard, Arthur (1917-2004), a New Zealand athletics coach, developed successful techniques for training long-distance runners. As part of their training, he encouraged athletes to run over rough, hilly ground. Lydiard used this technique to train New Zealand runners Murray Halberg and Peter Snell, who later won events at the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Games (see Halberg, Murray ). Lydiard was the New Zealand marathon champion in 1953 and 1955. He was born on July 6, 1917, in Auckland, on the North Island of New Zealand. He died on Dec. 11, 2004.
