Mackey, Mick

Mackey, Mick (1912-1982), an Irish hurler, ranks as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Mackey played for Limerick, Ireland, in the 1930’s and 1940’s. In the 1936 Munster final against Tipperary, he scored a record five goals and three points. He captained Limerick to an All-Ireland victory that year and in 1940. He had previously played on the winning team in 1934 and on the losing team in the finals of 1933 and 1935. Mackey won eight Railway Cup medals and five successive National League medals from 1934 through 1938.

Michael Mackey was born on July 12, 1912, in Castleconnel, northern County Limerick. He first played at the senior level for Limerick in 1930. He last played for Limerick in the 1947 Munster semifinal. Mackey trained the Limerick team that defeated Clare in 1955 in the Munster final.
