Mallory, George Leigh

Mallory, George Leigh (1886-1924), was a British mountaineer who died on Mount Everest. His first expedition to Everest was in 1921. In 1922, he joined another expedition. In 1924, on his third expedition, the main party climbed to within 3,000 feet (915 meters) of the summit. Mallory and Andrew Irvine left the main party to make the final attempt to the summit on June 8, 1924. They were never seen again. In 1933, an ice pick was found at a height of 27,560 feet (8,400 meters). In 1999, a party of climbers found Mallory’s body about 2,000 feet (600 meters) from the summit, but whether Mallory and Irvine reached the top is not known. If they did, the two would be the first mountaineers to reach the summit of Mount Everest, almost 30 years before Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed to the summit in 1953. Mallory was born on June 18, 1886, in Mobberley, Cheshire, England. He was educated at Cambridge University.
