Marks, Lord (1888-1964), a British businessman and philanthropist, provided clothing at moderate prices to millions of people. He was nominated Retailer of the Year in 1962.
Simon Marks was born in Leeds on July 9, 1888. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School. He joined his father’s retail firm, Marks and Spencer. He served as a signaler in World War I (1914-1918). He later became chairman and managing director of the firm. In 1961, Queen Elizabeth II elevated him to the peerage and he became Baron Marks of Broughton. Lord Marks died on Dec. 8, 1964.
