Master of the rolls is a British judge who heads the civil division of the Court of Appeal in the House of Lords. The judge keeps rolls (court records) of charters, judgments, and patents. The master of the rolls presides over one of the courts and supervises the work of the other judges of the division. The master also coordinates the rules regarding lawyers in court. The king or queen of the United Kingdom appoints the master of the rolls.
