Matthews, Sir Stanley

Matthews, Sir Stanley (1915-2000), became one of the greatest players in English soccer history. Soccer is called football in many countries. Matthews was famous for his speed, dribbling, passing ability, and his ability to set up goals for his teammates to score. Matthews was one of the most popular players in the history of soccer and his appearances generally attracted huge crowds. He was also widely admired for his sportsmanship. Matthews was named European Footballer of the Year in 1956. In 1965, he became the first professional footballer to receive a knighthood.

Matthews was born on Feb. 1, 1915, in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire . He began his professional career in 1932 playing for Stoke City. In 1947, he left Stoke City to join the Blackpool team, where he played until 1961. He then rejoined Stoke City, and played there until he retired in 1965. In 1990, Matthews became president of Stoke City. Matthews died on Feb. 23, 2000.
