Maxwell, Robert (1923-1991) was a British publisher and politician. He had business interests in electronics, motion-picture production, and television, but was best known as the flamboyant chairman of Mirror Group newspapers from 1984 to 1991.
Robert Maxwell was born on June 10, 1923, in Slatinske Doly, in what is now the Czech Republic. His given name was Jan Ludvik Hoch. He served in World War II (1939-1945), fighting for the British Army. In the United Kingdom, Maxwell served as a Labour member of Parliament from 1964 to 1970. On Nov. 5, 1991, shortly after the initial public offering of Mirror Group stock, Maxwell disappeared from his luxury yacht. He was later found dead in the sea off the Canary Islands. Subsequent investigations proved that Maxwell had been drawing large amounts of money from his employee pension funds to prop up his business empire.
