Mitchell Library, in Sydney, New South Wales, is a research collection of hundreds of thousands of printed books and many thousands of manuscripts, maps, drawings, prints, and photographs relating to Australia. The collection also covers the Pacific region from Indonesia to Hawaii and from the Philippines to the Antarctic. The library is named in honor of David Scott Mitchell, a wealthy Australian book collector. He donated his collection with an endowment to the Public Library of New South Wales in 1907. Gifts and purchases have enlarged the collection. Opened in 1910, the Mitchell Library is housed in the State Library of New South Wales. The Mitchell Library is available for use by scholars and advanced students. See also Mitchell, David Scott.
