Morceli, Noureddine (1970-…), is a record-breaking Algerian middle distance runner. Morceli is slightly built but is capable of devastating speed. During his career, Morceli has broken all four outdoor world records in races from 1,500 meters to 3,000 meters. He also has held world indoor records in the 1,000-meter and 1,500-meter races. Morceli won the gold medal for 1,500 meters at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
Morceli was born on Feb. 28, 1970, in Ternes, Algeria. Morceli’s brother Abderahmane coached him from an early age. Morceli finished second in the World Junior 1,500 meters in 1988 before spending two years on a sports scholarship in the United States. In 1991, Morceli was unbeaten in 15 races at 1,500 meters and 1 mile, and was world champion both indoors and outdoors in both events. In 1992, he ended the season breaking the world 1,500 meters record in Italy. In 1995 he broke both the 1,500 and the 2,000 meters world records.
