Mount Bartle Frere is the highest peak in Queensland, Australia. It rises to a height of 5,285 feet (1,611 meters) above sea level within the Bellenden Ker Range in northeastern Queensland. The mountain is not a significant tourist attraction because of its isolated location. Visitors can reach it only by following a bush track through dense rain forest. It was named by the Australian explorer George Elphinstone Dalrymple in 1873 in honor of the British statesman Sir Bartle Frere, who was then president of the Royal Geographical Society in London, an organization that sponsored geographical research projects and scientific expeditions.
