Mount Ngauruhoe is an active volcano in the North Island of New Zealand. It rises to about 7,550 feet (2,300 meters) above sea level. Mount Ngauruhoe is one of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes, and it usually has smoke rising from its crater. At times it erupts, covering its snowy peak with black ashes and streams of lava. These eruptions cause no harm, because few people live nearby. It last erupted in 1975, throwing lava blocks up to 2 miles (3 kilometers) across the unpopulated area. The mountain is one of three in Tongariro National Park. The others are Mount Tongariro, in the north, and Mount Ruapehu, in the south (see Mount Ruapehu ; Mount Tongariro ).
