Munrow, David (1942-1976), was an influential British musician, composer, and lecturer on the history of music. In 1967, he founded the Early Music Consort of London, which performed works dating from before 1600. The Consort’s performances of medieval and Renaissance music introduced compositions from these periods to a large new audience. Munrow played such early wind instruments as the shawm and the recorder. His music was featured in television plays and in motion pictures. From 1971 to 1976, Munrow presented a popular children’s radio program called Pied Piper.
David John Munrow was born on Aug. 12, 1942, in Birmingham and educated at Cambridge (1961-1964) and Birmingham (1965) universities. He committed suicide on May 15, 1976, at the age of 33.
