New Holland

New Holland is a former name for Australia. In 1642, Abel Janszoon Tasman, a Dutch navigator, sailed around Australia, reaching what are now Tasmania, New Zealand, and New Guinea. Dutch maps produced from his voyage showed Australia, Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania), and New Guinea as one continent, called Nova Hollandia (New Holland).
