North Tyneside (pop. 208,967) is a district in Tyne and Wear Metropolitan County in northeastern England. It includes the resorts of Cullercoats, Tynemouth, and Whitley Bay. North Tyneside lies along the north bank of the River Tyne where the river empties into the North Sea. Historically, fishing was the area’s leading economic activity, but now light industry and tourism are the leading activities.
Notable relics from Roman times still stand in North Tyneside. Hadrian’s Wall, which stretches across much of northern England, comes to an end at Wallsend, near the mouth of the River Tyne. The Segedunum Roman fort marks the eastern end of the wall. The fort and associated Roman baths have been turned into a museum.
