Northampton

Northampton (pop. 245,899) is a town in the ceremonial county of Northamptonshire, England. The British monarch appoints royal representatives, including a lord lieutenant and a high sheriff, to each of England’s ceremonial counties. Northampton is a manufacturing center known for its footwear industry.

The town of Northampton stands on the River Nene. Its notable buildings include St. Peter’s Church, which has Norman decorations, and a modern Roman Catholic cathedral. In 2021, Northampton became the administrative center of the unitary authority of West Northamptonshire. A unitary authority is a kind of local government area in the United Kingdom.
