O Fiaich, Tomas, << oh FEE, toh MAHS >> (1923-1990), served as Roman Catholic archbishop of Armagh, Northern Ireland, and primate of all Ireland from 1977 until his death. From 1959 to 1974, he was a professor of modern history at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, Ireland. He was president of the college from 1974 to 1977.
Tomas Seamus O Fiaich was born on Nov. 3, 1923, in Crossmaglen, Northern Ireland. He was educated at colleges in Armagh; Dublin, Ireland; Maynooth; and Wexford, Ireland. O Fiaich also attended the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium. He was ordained as a priest in 1948 and became a lecturer at Maynooth in 1953. Pope John Paul II made O Fiaich a cardinal by in 1979. O Fiaich died on May 8, 1990.
